Pre-Update Instructions

NB. please contact Highwire Support or myself if you have the older version of the template and want to upgrade.

How To Change the Highlight Colour

DESIGN TIP: Pick a colour that is prominent in your logo or products. Avoid dark colours, as this will make the text very hard to read.

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor.

2. Near the bottom, under Style Sheets, click on ‘color.css’.

3. Follow the steps given on screen.

How To Create Your Own Slides

Software: You probably already have some photo-editing software that you use to prepare your product photos (if not, you should probably get some!). Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks are excellent if expensive, but there are plenty of others available.

DESIGN TIP: How your slides look is entirely up to you, of course, but a single, bold image usually works better than trying to show too much in one go. Similarly, if you are including text on a slide, keep it short and punchy!

Dimensions: Your slides need to be 72 dpi and 950 pixels wide. There is no particular requirement for height – the slides on the demo site are 425 pixels high, but you can vary this if you want. Whatever you choose, keep your slides all the same height – it just looks neater!

File Type: Save your slides as jpg images.

File Size: Try to keep the file size as small as possible to minimise load-time when someone first looks at your store. You can do this by setting the jpg quality (or compression) fairly low, just not so low that it makes the image look rubbish.

Maximum Number of Slides: 10.

How To Add Your Own Slides

1. Name your slides as follows: slide1.jpg, slide2.jpg, slide3.jpg …

2. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > File Browser, then click on ‘theme-assets’. You will be presented with a big list of all the files used by this theme.

3. Upload your slides, which will replace the demo slides. If you have less than 3 slides, delete the remaining demo slides.

That’s it! The theme template will automatically find your slides and insert them into the slideshow.

Note that the slides must be numbered in sequence. If you have files named slide1.jpg, slide2.jpg and slide4.jpg, then only the first two will show – the computer spots that there is no number 3 and stops there.

How To Remove the Slideshow

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > File Browser, then click on ‘theme-assets’. You will be presented with a big list of all the files used by this theme.

2. Scroll down to find slide1.jpg.

3. Delete slide1.jpg by clicking the red button on the right. Wait a minute for the page to reload.

That’s it! As long as there is no file called slide1.jpg, then the slideshow will not be displayed.

How To Have a Single Slide that Doesn’t Move

If there is just one slide, named slide1.jpg, then this will be displayed the whole time. Remember to delete the demo slides, as described above (see How To Remove the Slideshow).

How To Create Your Own Full-screen Background

DESIGN TIP: How your backgrounds look is entirely up to you, of course, but it’s important to avoid anything too distracting from the main content of the page. That’s why the demo site uses heavily blurred versions of the slideshow images.

Dimensions: Your slides need to be 72 dpi and 2500 pixels wide by 1600 pixels high.

File Type: Save your slides as jpg images.

File Size: Try to keep the file size as small as possible to minimise load-time when someone first looks at your store. You can do this by setting the jpg quality (or compression) fairly low, just not so low that it makes the image look rubbish. Using a blurred image and keeping down the range of colours both really help with reducing file size.

Maximum Number of Full-screen Backgrounds: 10. Note that there is no need to have the same number of backgrounds and slides.

How To Add Your Own Full-screen Background

1. Name your backgrounds as follows: fullscreen1.jpg, fullscreen2.jpg, fullscreen3.jpg …

2. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > File Browser, then click on ‘theme-assets’. You will be presented with a big list of all the files used by this theme.

3. Upload your backgrounds, which will replace the demo backgrounds. If you have less than 3 backgrounds, delete the remaining demo backgrounds.

That’s it! The theme template will automatically find your backgrounds and insert them.

Note that the backgrounds must be numbered in sequence. If you have files named fullscreen1.jpg, fullscreen2.jpg and fullscreen4.jpg, then only the first two will show – the computer spots that there is no number 3 and stops there.

How To Have a Plain Background

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > File Browser, then click on ‘theme-assets’. You will be presented with a big list of all the files used by this theme.

2. Scroll down to find fullscreen1.jpg.

3. Delete fullscreen1.jpg by clicking the red button on the right. Wait a minute for the page to reload.

That’s it! As long as there is no file called fullscreen1.jpg, then background images will not be displayed, leaving a plain grey colour. To change that grey colour, see below:

How To Change the Background Colour (if not using Background Images)

DESIGN TIP: Stick to a fairly neutral color, that won't distract from the main content.

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor.

2. Near the bottom, under Style Sheets, click on ‘background-color.css’.

3. Follow the steps given on screen.
